Read MoreWhen Michelle is seven, her father claims to receive a revelation from God. He catapults the family from one religious cult to the next, landing them in an isolated, off-the-grid enclave founded by an errant Amish bishop with evangelical aspirations: The Community.
It only takes a few weeks for young Michelle to sense dark truths lurking in the heart of her new home, but there is little she can do. Meanwhile, her father develops bizarre episodes of unconsciousness and declares himself a prophet. When his proclamations go too far, The Community pushes back.
After years of brainwashing, Michelle is forced to choose between faith and family. Her decisions betray everyone’s expectations, branding her the ultimate Judas.
JUDAS GIRL offers an unflinching look at the traumatic effects of extreme religion paired with the dark complexities of mental illness. Questioning core definitions of faith, family, and love, it is ultimately a story of hope and healing that will resonate with survivors of religious abuse and childhood trauma alike.
Michelle Stewart spent her childhood and early adulthood in cults and extreme religious groups. Now an activist helping those from similar backgrounds, her mission is to spread awareness about the dangers of extreme religion, especially on children.
JUDAS GIRL, a memoir of her experiences and healing, is her first full-length publication.
She now resides in Colorado with her family and three dogs.
